Fury: I will use my talent to beat Chisora

By Sean McDaniel: Unbeaten Tyson Fury (14-0, 10 KO’s) faces one of the best heavyweights in the world on July 23 against British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s) in a 12 round at the Wembley Arena, Wembley, London. Although technically the British/Commonwealth titles are going to be on the line for this fight the fight is much more significant than these small titles.

The winner of the bout will obviously be given a big push on the world scene and could factor in for a future fight against one of the Klitschko brothers. WBA heavyweight champion David Haye is said to be retiring, so he’ll likely ignore the winner of this bout and opt not to face one of them.

Fury said this as thesun.co.uk: “God has given me a talent and I intend to use it. He [Chisora] is a good fighter, tough, has power, quick hands, quick feet. I wonder underestimate him.”

Fury is still a project right now for legendary trainer Emanuel Steward, who is trying to craft Fury into a future heavyweight champion in the same way that he turned Wladimir Klitschko into an unbeatable heavyweight. Steward has a lot more work with Fury than he had to do with Wladimir because Fury has less of the physical gifts and the big amateur background that Wladimir had before Steward began to train him. Chisora is facing Fury at the fight time, however, because Fury still hasn’t applied enough of Steward’s teaching to make him hard to beat. You can see Fury trying to use what Steward is teaching him but he still reverts back to the sloppy slugger than he’s always been in the heat of battle.

It’s Steward’s job to try and keep him focused and not going primitive against Chisora. It’s important that Fury fight smart against Chisora because Fury’s talent isn’t necessarily better than Chisora’s. The one thing that Fury has over Chisora is size, but he’s not been using his size to beat his opposition. He’s more or a less a close range slapper and one with poor stamina. Fury has been able to get by with the soft opposition he’s been put in with thus far but his time could run out against Chisora unless Fury follows Steward’s game plan to the letter.
