Image: Pacquiao will absorb a lot of punishment from Mosley if he doesn't stop himBy Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach is really hoping that his fighter will stop 39-year-old Shane Mosley on Saturday night to prove an unprovable point – that Pacquiao is better than Floyd Mayweather Jr. Sadly, a win over Mosley won’t prove that and will only prove that Pacquiao can beat Mayweather’s leftovers. But Roach is still hoping that Mayweather will get the urge to fight Pacquiao if he’s able to stop Mosley and do something that Mayuweather didn’t do in his one-sided 12 round decision win over Mosley a year ago.

Of course, if you saw the Mosley vs. Mayweather fight, you’d immediately see that Mayweather wasn’t trying to take out Mosley. He was boxing him silly and not unloading on him to try and prove himself. Why should he? Mosley had never been beaten like the way Mayweather beat him, and he didn’t need to stop him to try and prove anything. But perhaps another reason why Roach wants Pacquiao to take Mosley out as fast as possible on Saturday night is because if Mosley is allowed to stick around for 12 rounds, Pacquiao will likely take even worse punishment than he did in his last fight against Antonio Margarito.

That was one of Pacquiao’s hardest fights of his career despite it being a fairly one-sided affair. Margarito landed a lot of hard head shots in that fight and it didn’t matter that he didn’t match Pacquiao in terms of his high punch out-put. Pacquiao still took a lot of nasty head shots and looked terrible after the fight. This is why if Mosley sticks around for 10 or more rounds on Saturday night, Pacquiao is going to get beat up a little and maybe a lot. Mosley could end up shortening Pacquiao’s career. This is what happens when you step up to the welterweight division. You’re going to take a pounding and now that Pacquiao facing actual welterweights instead of guys like Ricky Hatton, he’s starting to get beat up now.
