Maidana could be fighting Guerrero in August

By Dan Ambrose: With Amir Khan now facing Zab Judah, Golden Boy Promotions are now looking to match former two division world champion Robert Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KO’s) up against WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KO’s), according to Steve Kim on his twitter page.

Richard Schaefer, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, wants to put Guerrero and Maidana together in what would be an excellent fight if it can be made. Guerrero had been previously in the running for a fight against Khan for July 23, although I don’t think Guerrero was ever seriously considered due to his lack of a big name. But Guerrero would be perfect for Maidana.

The only issue with this fight is the size difference. Guerrero hasn’t been fighting at lightweight for that long and would have to move up in weight to light welterweight and would be taking one of the biggest punchers in the division in Maidana.

Guerrero’s style of fighting would leave him open to getting hit a lot by Maidana. I don’t expect that Guerrero would be able to move Maidana with his shots, because he’s used to getting hit from bigger punchers. But the question is would Guerrero be able to handle having a fighter with heavy hands like Maidana tagging him all night long? Guerrero did do a good job of handling slugger Michael Katsidis in a one-sided 12 round decision last April.

However, Maidana is a bigger puncher than Katsidis and can punch with both hands with equal strength, not just his left hand like Katsidis. Guerrero could even win the fight but at what cost? Being tagged in the head for 12 rounds against a desperate Maidana probably isn’t the best thing for a guy that’s just moving up in weight like Guerrero. He’s tailor made for Maidana with his inside fighting and it could be ugly for Guerrero.
