Kessler thinks Froch will win the Super Six tournament

Image: Kessler thinks Froch will win the Super Six tournamentBy Scott Gilfoid: Former super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler is picking WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KO’s) to win the Super Six tournament in 2011. It’s an interesting pick for Kessler, because he already beat Froch by a 12 round decision last year. Kessler, in turn, was easily beaten by WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward by a lopsided 11th round technical decision in 2009.

It doesn’t seem to make sense what Kessler is saying, because if Ward was able to easily beat him, and he was able to beat Froch, wouldn’t it seem a bit more logical to pick Ward as the eventual winner of the Super Six rather than Froch? Who knows? I could be that Kessler has some sour grapes still about his loss to Ward, and by picking Froch, a guy he already beat as the winner, it’s his way of showing that he’s not going to give Ward credit for his dominating performance in beating him.

Speaking with eastsideboxing.com, Kessler said “I think that Carl Froch has a good chance of winning the Super Six. Ward is a good fighter. He’s a clever fighter. He knows how to hold the opponent. He knows how to spar his opponent. So it’s difficult to say in the Super Six. It’s a difficult tournament, but I would actually put my cards on Carl Froch.”

Well, I wouldn’t put my cards on Froch winning. Since the fight isn’t going to be in Nottingham, England, the home of Froch and where he won a controversial 12 round decision over Andre Dirrell in the first fight of the Super Six tournament, I see Ward easily beating Froch in a fight that will be taking place in the United States. However, this is all speculation because I can’t see Froch winning his next fight against Johnson. Kessler seems to have entirely forgotten about Johnson and doesn’t seem to be aware of his fighting style either. For example, this is what Kessler had to say about the Johnson-Froch fight:

“Now Carl Froch and Glen Johnson I think it’s going to be a bit of an ugly fight because Johnson doesn’t want to fight as much. Carl Froch wants to fight.”

That right there tells me that Kessler isn’t familiar with Johnson’s style of fighting. Kessler is saying Johnson “doesn’t want to fight as much.” Is Kessler confused about who Johnson is? It seems like it. Johnson is someone that only knows how to fight. His bouts are 100% pure action. He’s not known for being someone that you have to go looking for because he’s right there in front of you. I don’t think that Kessler is aware that Johnson is a pressure fighter and he seems to have his description of him mixes up with George Groves, a non Super Six fighter rather than Johnson. I have to completely ignore everything that Kessler has to say about Froch winning the Super Six based on Kessler’s description of Johnson. That tells me that Kessler is in the dark about Johnson and doesn’t know what this guy is all about. He will soon enough when Johnson beats Froch worse than Kessler did and sends Froch home to Nottingham in defeat. Kessler can then come up with a good prediction about the Johnson-Ward Super Six finals – if anyone will be listening to him by then.
