Image: Haye makes excuses for being tongue-tied with KlitschkoBy Scott Gilfoid: WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-1, 23 KO’s) was full of excuses for being at a loss for words and looking to fearful in his first press conference with IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) on Monday in Hamburg, Germany.

In Tuesday’s press conference in London, Haye did his best to explain away why his voice was cracking and he seemed almost about to cry at one point, saying “A lot of you thought I was a bit subdued, that I just sat down, with no stunts. Well, the reason for that is, whereas in the past I’ve always been thinking about what to say before my fights; this time I just want to train and be focusing 100% on beating him [Wladimir] as conclusively and explosively as possible.”

That’s got to be about the most silliest excuse for choking that I’ve ever heard in my life. Gee, I’m sure glad Haye cleared that up, because it looked to me that Haye froze in the spotlight and seemed to be scared out of his gourd at standing next to the towering 6’6″ Klitschko. It looked like to me that Haye lost his nerve and could barely raise his voice above a whisper. I thought he was going to start blubbering for a second there. It was bad.

Haye continued “Most of my energy is going on thinking about destroying him rather than thinking about something clever to say.”

I smell fear. I think Haye is scared to be around Wladimir. I don’t know what it is but perhaps Haye is already seeing the beating in store for him on July 2nd and it’s put him off track to where his trap won’t open. I guess it will be up to Wladimir to market and promote the fight with Haye just standing next to him like a cardboard prop. This is bad. I never thought I’d see the way where Haye would lose his nerve to the point where he can’t even think of something interesting to say.
