Image: Chavez Jr. may have problems with ZbikBy Dan Ambrose: It’s no secret that unbeaten Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) has been carefully groomed to get to the point where he is today in facing undefeated WBC middleweight champion Sebastian Zbik (30-0, 10 KO’s) next month on June 4th at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California.

This is a title opportunity that Chavez Jr. has gotten without having to take on a dangerous top contender like Marco Antonio Rubio, Paul Williams or Fernando Guerrero. All Chavez Jr. has had to do is beat a stack of 2nd tier middleweights and then step up to beat John Duddy and Billy Lyell and here Chavez Jr. is fighting for a title.

It’s been a shockingly easy ride for Chavez Jr. to get to this position because he hasn’t had to take a major risks to get to this shot at the World Boxing Council title. And that’s the whole problem. When you’ve been matched so carefully it doesn’t help with the growth. You are what you fight. And Chavez Jr. has been feasting on B level fighters for eight years now. On June 4th, Chavez Jr. faces a decent fighter in 29-year-old Zbik.

This is clearly the best fighter that Chavez Jr. has faced in his career and there’s a real danger here that the Chavez Jr. gravy train could be about to end. judging by how poor Chavez Jr. looked in his recent sparring session with Vanes Martirosyan, Chavez Jr. could be in a world of hurt with Zbik. This is going to be a really difficult fight for Chavez unless he can find a way to take Zbik out, and I doubt that. Zbik is a boxer/puncher with great technical skills, an excellent chin and decent power. Chavez Jr. is going to have to fight a really good fight if he wants to win this bout and move on to the big money fight against fellow Top Rank stablemate Miguel Cotto in September.
