Chavez Jr. looking physically huge for Zbik fight

By Chris Williams: With little over two weeks to go before the June 4th match-up between World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight champion Sebastian Zbik (30-0, 10 KO’s) and unbeaten challenger Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California, one can’t help but notice how much bigger the 25-year-old Chavez Jr. is looking now. At the media day photo session, Chavez Jr. looked like a light heavyweight and he doesn’t appear to be overweight like he was in his fight against Billy Lyell in January.

Chavez Jr. looks huge, like he’s packed on a good 15 pounds of muscle between that fight and this one. His arms are a lot bigger as is his upper body. It’s like looking at a completely different fighter. I’m wondering whether Chavez Jr. is going to be able make weight for the Zbik fight. I don’t doubt that Chavez Jr. can beat Zbik, as I see him as a paper champion that was given a title by the World Boxing Council without having to actually earn it in the ring. But if Chavez Jr. can’t make weight, what goes is it do him? He looks too big now and I think he’s put on far too much muscle.

This is the wrong fighter for Chavez Jr. to go packing on muscle against. This is overkill on Chavez’s part. He doesn’t need it to beat a guy like Zbik. All he needs to beat him is speed and an ability to throw a lot of punches. But looking at how big Chavez Jr. is now, I can’t see him staying at middleweight for too much longer. He may have to move up sooner or later, especially if he can’t make weight for this fight.

That’s not necessarily a good thing though because the super middleweight division is loaded with talent. It’s not like the middleweight division where you have weak fighters all throughout the division. Other than Sergio Martinez, the middleweight division is terribly poor one. Chavez Jr. is much better off there than if he’s forced to move up in weight and fight the likes of Andre Ward and Lucian Bute. I wouldn’t want to see what those guys would do to Chavez Jr.
