Will Jorge Arce upset Wilfredo Vazquez Jr?

By Gerardo Granados: After watching Victor Ortiz upset Andre Berto to gain the WBC welterweight title, and Orlando Salido upset Juan Manuel Lopez to gain the WBO featherweight title, some friends asked me if Jorge Arce (T64-W56(43)-L6(3)-D2) will be able to defeat the younger champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. ( T21-W30(17)-L0-D1). Erik Morales put up a big effort against “Chino” Maidana but the fight judges declared Marcos as the winner, although it was great to see a veteran engage against a young lion the way “El Terrible” did.

On times it is clear that one of the fighters will win, some times it is quite obvious to see how they match the champion to fight against a tailor made opponent so he can look good by utterly defeating him; but, sometimes the underdog pulls the victory.

Wilfredo is a young talented boxer, good speed, power, defense and mobility, he might not have faced great opposition yet but he will stop Arce before the twelve round, Jorge has a vast experience and has faced great opposition, he lost to hall of fame member Michael Carbajal back in 1999 by TKO11, lost to Vic Darchinyan in 2009 RTD11, lost to current IBF super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares, lost to former IBF light flyweight Victor Burgos and former IBF super flyweight Simphiwe Nongqayi; his best days are long gone but his heart and courage are still intact.

If Arce prepares himself properly and shows the determination to win just as Victor Ortiz did to clearly defeat Andre Berto then Wilfredo Vazquez jr might have a rough night but he would still end up winning the fight. The champion has a good chin and at super bantamweight the former junior flyweight champion “Travieso” Arce wont have the power that he used to have at flyweight to stop his rivals. But not the less he will have a chance to defeat Wilfredo only if he is able to improve his over all defensive skills not just if he learns to slip and block the power punches of these promising young lion. If Arce was a complete boxer then he would be as competitive as Morales was against Maidana, but after seeing him fight all this years it is quite obvious that Jorge is a brawler and that he has always had difficulties when he fights a boxer that moves well and counter punch him.

If Vazquez jr underestimates Arce he will struggle to defeat him, but if he believes that Arce signed to become a step stone for him then he might be misleading himself. Arce is a proven warrior, has average defense and that is his major weakness but his determination to win has never been questioned.

Arce as Morales was against Maidana, is in a win – win situation, he is the underdog and the younger Vazquez Jr has the pressure to win in a great fashion. Arce is a former WBC junior flyweight, interim WBC flyweight, interim WBA World super flyweight, and WBO super flyweight champion, he has engaged in too many bloody fights and after 15 title fights he wont see anything new against Wilfredo. Arce aims to become a three division champion and that goal will motivate him to add his name to a select list of mexican boxers such as Chavez, Morales, Barrera, Marquez and Montiel, the problem for him is that he has never been as skilled as the ones previously mentioned.

No matter what is the outcome of this fight one thing is for certain, this will be an exciting fight to watch while it last.
