By Scott Gilfoid: WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (23-0, 13 KO’s) is ready to show the world that he’s the best super middleweight when he takes on Arthur Abraham (32-2, 26 KO’s) in the Super six tournament on May 14th at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. The way that the 27-year-old Ward figures it, he has only two more fights to win before he’s proven without a shadow of the doubt that he’s the best fighter at super middleweight in the world.
The only fighters that you can argue are still out there and an obstacle for Ward’s supremacy is the talented Andre Dirrell, and Lucian Bute. I expect Ward to easily handle Bute when the time comes. Dirrell will be a whole different matter. Ward can win if Dirrell is rusty from inactivity. But if Dirrell has been busy and fighting often, then I can see him winning the match up with Ward. Right now Ward would have the advantage against Dirrell, because Dirrell has been out of boxing since last year when he was hurt when fouled by Abraham.
All Ward has to do is stay out of the way of Abraham’s wild home run shots and the fight is won. Abraham can’t box for anything and will be huffing and puffing with his wild punches. Abraham is going to be desperate on May 14th, but fighting more with fear than with his head. This will make it a lot easier for Ward to pick him off and build up an insurmountable lead going into the later rounds. Abraham will get ever desperate and need to really go for broke. It will make him incredibly vulnerable for Ward’s quick counters. Abraham will only have a plan A and won’t be able to make the needed changes in order for him to be competitive with Ward.
