Mosley says he wouldn’t fight Sergio Martinez because he’s too big

By Chris Williams: Shane Mosley doesn’t want to fight middleweight Sergio Martinez in the future once Mosley’s May 7th fight with Manny Pacquiao is done with. Mosley feels that the 5’10” Martinez is too big for him, even through Martinez is smaller than 5’11” Antonio Margarito, who Mosley defeated by a 9th round stoppage in 2009.

Martinez only moved up to middleweight in 2010, and before that he had been fighting at 154. It could be that what Mosley is referring to is Martinez’s power being too big rather than his size. He’s a bigger puncher than Margarito, and he’s not incredibly slow the way that Margarito is. Mosley would have to be fighting someone not only powerful but very fast with Martinez. We saw how poorly Mosley looked in his loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last year. You could expect an even worse beating if Mosley were to step it up against Martinez.

In an interview at On the Ropes Boxing Radio at eastsideboxing.com, Mosley said “No I wouldn’t go up to middleweight to face Sergio Martinez because he’s too big. 154 pounds I can get away with where I’m not as strong or whatever, but my body frame is not big enough for that. If Manny Pacquiao doesn’t want to fight maybe I can get a rematch with [Floyd] Mayweather.”

Mosley is hoping to get a rematch with Pacquiao for November. For that to happen Mosley will have to either beat Pacquiao or fight him close enough for boxing fans to be interested in paying big money to see him get beat again. I can’t see either of those scenarios happening. Mosley won’t beat Pacquiao and will lose badly enough to where no one will want to even consider paying to see Pacquiao destroy Mosley again. As it is, Mosley hasn’t won a fight in two long years and should have lost his last fight against Sergio Mora, who Mosley fought to a 12 round draw against in 2010.
