Hit but not miss

By Chris McHugh: It’s coming upto the time when Rob McCracken has to break certain boxers’ hearts naming his final squad for the 2012 London Olympics, as he cuts down his provisional team to the final few. However, it’s not the end of the road for the guys who don’t make the team.

I can’t pretend to know the amateur game as well as the many die-hard boxing fans who log on to this site, but i do know that within the north west area there is some up-and-coming talent that should be taken note of.

Over the last few weeks i have been scowling my local areas to see what the future holds, and believe me it looks great.

Following a routine trip to Newtown I dropped on an amateur middleweight named Daniel ‘The Exterminator’ Elms, who despite his lack of experience, seemed to possess the ability and fluency that i have not seen since a young Junior Witter.

He over-powered his opponent from the off with a switch-hitting style that the Bradford man showed at the peak of his ability.

After speaking at length with his trainer Ste Barlow, of SB Boxing and Fitness, I realized ‘The Exterminator’ had come back from the depths of despair after his family gave up on him.

The young fighter turned Barlow for guidance, and instead of a cell he is now plying his trade in the ring.

Barlow said: “He’s had to fight a mental battle to get where he is today, but now he’s rid of his demons he’s got the potential to go all the way.”

Personally, after just witnessing one bout, i don’t believe it’s long before we’re seeing this guy’s name on a big undercard, whether he believes it or not.

So, despite one minor set back i hope the amateurs show the same heart and soul as this unsung hero.
