By William Mackay: WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KO’s) has decided to leave his promoter Mick Hennessy or Hennessy Sports and go off on his own to promote his own fights. Froch, 32, has been with Hennessy for a number of years, yet Froch has failed to become a star despite some success in the Super Six tournament.
While it’s nice that Froch is deciding to promote himself it is a bit late the game for this move. Froch may not have much more time left at the top and he’s likely going to get beaten either in the semifinal or the finals of the Super Six tourney.
Here is what Froch had to say on the promoter issue in an interview at livefight.com: “I’m no longer working with my representative Mick Hennessy. My next two fights are already mapped out within the Super Six tournament. I am just solely concentrating right now on beating the likes of Glencoffe Johnson and hopefully Andre Ward.”
Froch has the fight against Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KO’s) coming up on June 4th at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. This is going to be a really tough fight for Froch, because Johnson has a high workrate, good power and a better inside game than Froch. For Froch to win this fight he’s going to have to use his height and reach and focus on boxing rather than trying to out-slug the 42-year-old veteran.
Perhaps Froch would be on his to becoming a star right now in the UK, but he struggled badly with Andre Dirrell in his first fight in the Super Six tournament in 2009, winning a questionable decision. And then in Froch’s second fight, he was beaten by Mikkel Kessler. That surely didn’t help Froch any. Although he did come back and beat Arthur Abraham in his last Super Six tournament bout last year, but Abraham had already been beaten by Dirrell just before that fight and was somewhat softened up for Froch.
