Image: Danny Green vs. Antonio Taver on 7/20By Dan Ambrose: In a somewhat interested fighting, IBO cruiserweight champion Danny Green (31-3, 27 KO’s) will defend his title against 42-year-old former light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver (28-6, 19 KO’s) on July 20th at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, in Sydney, Australian.

This would have been an interesting fight a couple of years ago, but it’s not nearly so interesting now with Green 38 and coming off of a less than impressive win over BJ Flores in November of last year. Both of these guys are old now. Green hasn’t been taking on guys like Marco Huck. He should have fought him ages ago.

There is also the strange 1st round knockout win for Green over Paul Briggs last year where Briggs sunk to the canvas after getting hit with a shot that grazed the top of his head. That was a strange one and it caused more than a few boxing fans to wonder if the fight was on the level.

Tarver has lost two out of his last three fights and recently moved up to the heavyweight division. He defeated Nagy Aguilera by a 10 round decision last October. Tarver wants to get a title shot against one of the heavyweight champions but it looks like Tarver is going to have to wait until 2012 before he’s even considered for a bout by one of the three champions.

He’s going to be turning 43 in November, and it’s going to be tough for him to keep winning as he ages. Tarver’s only chance of getting a title shot is if one of the champions takes an interest in fighting Tarver over more qualified contenders. I don’t see that happening. He’s not a big enough draw.
