Why doesn’t Pacquiao fight Gamboa at a catchweight?

Image: Why doesn't Pacquiao fight Gamboa at a catchweight?By Chris Williams: If Bob Arum wants to have another one of his in house fights, he needs to consider putting Manny Pacquiao in with a live fighter like Yuriorkis Gamboa instead of an old guy like Shane Mosley or fighters that have had the stuffing pounded out of them before they got to Pacquiao like Antonio Margarito, Miguel Cotto or Joshua Clottey. Gamboa would be a perfect fight for Pacquiao, because we already have Jorge Solis saying that Gamboa punches harder than Pacquiao.

All we need to make this fight happen is for Pacquiao to be open to moving down in weight to fight Gamboa at a catchweight of 135 or so. Gamboa fights at 126 and Pacquiao fights at 147. If they both meet halfway, they could come into a fight at 135 unless Pacquiao decides to play the power position and insist on Gamboa coming all the way to 147 in order to fight him. Somehow I can see that happening. But if Pacquiao wants to fight someone that is actually fighting good and not coming off of a loss or long period between wins like Mosley, Pacquiao needs to fight Gamboa and try and show that he’s better than him.

I don’t think he is. I can see Gamboa lighting Pacquiao up like Gamboa did Solis the other night. Speed is power and Gamboa showed that he’s way more power than anyone in the featherweight division with his win over Solis. We already know that Gamboa is dominant at super featherweight because he started his career off at that weight, so it won’t be any problem moving up beyond that to fight Pacquiao at 135.

Pacquiao has been fighting bigger fighters that have had to drop weight in order to give Pacquiao handicap. Will Pacquiao return the favor by sacrificing some weight to fight Gamboa? We might as well have Pacquiao fight Gamboa because I don’t see Arum feeding Juan Manuel Lopez to the Cuban because he’ll probably ruin Lopez. At least Pacquiao is big enough to take a pounding from Gamboa without it wrecking him. I see Gamboa destroying Lopez and messing up the gravy train.
