If Morales beats Maidana we may see Morales-Barrera 4

By Dan Ambrose: There is a very good chance that we may see a fourth fight between Erik Morales (51-6, 35 KO’s) and 37-year-old Marco Antonio Barrera (67-7, 44 KO’s) if Morales beats Maidana on April 9th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Maidana is a heavy favorite to win the fight, however, but Morales has a chance to win if he can somehow out-box the hard hitting Maidana. If Morales can get the crowd behind him early on against Maidana, he could get the judges’ to lean in his favor and win a controversial decision.

As we’ve seen many times in boxing it doesn’t matter how you win just as long as you win. Morales will then move onto a 4th fight against Barrera in what will be in effect an old-timers fight between two aging veterans. Id don’t think Morales can really beat Maidana in a 100 years without Morales getting the judges to lean in his favor due to crowd noise. It’s not that Morales wasn’t an excellent fighter in his day.

However, that was many years ago and he’s looked mediocre at best since he came back last year after a three year retirement. Morales has won all three of his fights against Jose Alfaro, Willie Limond and Francisco Lorenzo. I saw Morales winning only one of those fights against Limond, but it tells you how hard it is to beat Morales because once you become popular like him, it takes a lot to get a decision against him. Maidana is going to have to be extra special to get a decision win and he might want to shoot hard for a knockout just to make sure that he gets the ‘W’ on April 9th.

Morales and Barrera would both love to get a fight with Manny Pacquiao. The chances of Morales getting another fight with Pacquiao are pretty much impossible even if Morales beats Maidana by a decision. Pacquiao has already fought Morales twice, stopping him twice in 2006. He’s not going to waste time fighting him a 4th time and besides, there isn’t any fan interest in another bout.
