Image: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s power gauged by Matthew HattonBy Francisco Hernandez: Mexican kid Saul Alvarez looked impressive in winning last Saturday night against the resolute Mathew Hatton. Despite his young age, Canelo carried himself with authority in the ring, not allowing the astute Hatton to get away with rabbit punching, reducing Hatton to the unmanly tactics of getting on his knees to plead point deductions against Canelo from the referee.

Mathew Hatton served as a good gauge for Canelo. Canelo definitely has the power, conditioning, and intelligence to defeat faded fighters like Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, and Antonio Margarito. I don’t see any of those fighters being able to hurt Canelo, and they are slow enough for Canelo to pick off with power shots. I don’t see any welterweights like Andre Berto or Manny Pacquiao being able to hurt Canelo at junior middleweight. Where I see problems for Canelo is against the real contenders in the junior middleweight division. Canelo doesn’t have the power to hurt Alfredo “Perro” Angulo, and Angulo does have the power to hurt Canelo. Self destructive James Kirkland after his stint in prison looks like a fifty year old, but he is still a threat and looks like he might be too vicious for Canelo. Canelo cannot afford to become a one dimensional fighter because there are opponents that can go toe to toe with him and hurt him. Canelo needs to learn how to set up fighters for a kayo and not just try to muscle his way in, because that will not work with fighters who are just as strong as or stronger than him at this weight division.
