Pacquiao vs. Mosley: Will the casual boxing fans purchase this fight in big numbers on PPV?

By Chris Williams: Thus far the interest among hardcore fans in the May 7th fight between 39-year-old Shane Mosley (46-6-1, 39 KO’s) and Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KO’s) has been lukewarm at best. If you look around the net, you’ll notice boxing fans aren’t even talking about this fight in boxing forums. Sure, pro-Pacquiao sites are talking about the Pacquiao vs. Mosley fight everyday but it’s not being discussed in boxing forums. The reason why is pretty simple.

Pacquiao is facing a guy who hasn’t won a fight in two years since the start of 2009 and has looked absolutely horrible in his two fights since then. The fight will be advertised like mad on CBS, a non premium channel with several Fight Camp 360 episodes being shown to the casual boxing fans. However, you have to wonder whether these same fans will be interested in purchasing this mismatch in big enough numbers for this fight to measure up to some of the recent big PPV fights of Pacquiao.

If the fight doesn’t bring in big numbers, it may be a wake up call for Pacquiao that it’s time he start stepping it up against better fighters that are winning and not struggling or fighting at catchweights. It’s been ages since Pacquiao fought what I consider his last tough fight against Juan Manuel Marquez in 2008. I would love if Pacquiao were to start taking on better fighters if his fight with Mosley brings in poor numbers but I’m not thinking that will happen. We could end up seeing a rematch with Miguel Cotto soon in another mismatch and I can’t believe fans will want to see that again.
