Haye hoping Vitali beats Solis on Saturday

By Jason Kim: WBA heavyweight champion David Haye remains skeptical about the chances for 39-year-old WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (41-2, 38 KO’s) to beat undefeated Cuban Odlanier Solis (17-0, 12 KO’s) on Saturday night in Cologne, Germany.

However, Haye badly wants Vitali to win in order to keep the small sliver of hope that Haye has that he can somehow get past his next opponent IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) in June or July and then move on to a mega fight against Vitali.

Haye knows how much trouble Solis can be because he lost to the former 2004 Olympic heavyweight gold medalist while fighting as an amateur. Solis had Haye shook up in their fight, so Haye is naturally giving Solis more respect because of that. Solis isn’t expected to beat Vitali on Saturday, however.

One of the reasons why is because Solis physically isn’t the same fighter he once was six years ago. Solis isn’t old at only 30, but he is quite a bit fatter than he was when he fought at 200. Indeed, Solis is between 50 and 60 pounds heavier from back in 2004, and a lot of that weight is fat.

Even the muscle that Solis has put on hasn’t seemed to make him a better fighter than he was while fighting as an amateur. However, what it all boils down to is that Solis may be simply too small to beat Vitali no matter what kind of shape Solis were in.

When you take a cruiserweight sized Olympian, slap on either 50 pounds of fat or 50 pounds of muscle, you’re still not going to be a huge heavyweight if you’re only 6’1”. You’re just going to be short and stocky and very easy to hit.
