Last Saturday night, the 21-year-old Broner defeated former super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon (41-3, 34 KO’s) by a controversial 10 round unanimous decision by the scores of 96-94, 99-81 and 96-94 at the Honda Center, in Anaheim, California.

De Leon was fighting two divisions above his best weight and he looked small compared the taller Broner. However, it was De Leon who was the bigger puncher and the more active fighter. While De Leon was throwing combinations, Broner focused on landing one punch at a time and moving a great deal. Broner’s style of fighting was similar to Floyd Mayweather Jr., except that Mayweather likes to throw combinations every now and then.

With Broner, it was almost entirely one pot shot at a time and this made it hard for him to win a lot of the round. De Leon kept coming all the time, firing power shots and looking to overwork Broner. A lot of De Leon’s shots were picked off on the gloves of Broner, but many more still landed to the head. Broner had the much better accuracy but because he wasn’t throwing enough, it looked like he lost at least seven of the ten rounds.

Broner got the win, but it’s almost impossible to see him beating established super featherweights like Robert Guerrero. Jorge Linares, Ricky Burns and Takashi Uchiyama. I cant see Broner ever beating those guys unless it’s by controversy.
