Pacquiao-Mosley: Shouldn’t there be Olympic style drug testing for this fight?

By Chris Williams: It seems to me like the May 7th bout between Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley would be the perfect occasion for both fighters to be tested for performance enhancing drugs by using the same Olympic style blood testing that Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been calling for since his failed attempt at getting a fight with Pacquiao in 2010.

This is a fight where both of these guys would go a long way towards taking the bite out of suspicions that some fighters/fans might have of them. It’s perfect for Pacquiao because in the past there’s been talk of him being weaken for several days after having his blood draw. Well, since Pacquiao is facing a 40-year-old for all practical purposes, and who is looking shot to pieces in terms of skills, why not take the blood testing for this fight because there’s not a whole heck of a lot to lose even if Pacquiao gets a little weak from having a tiny amount of blood taken.

I know how Pacquiao is into getting weight handicaps in his catch weight fights. Well, Pacquiao can think of the weakening effect that having blood taken from him as a handicap for Mosley. Maybe it will make the fight a little fairer, because god knows it’s going to embarrassingly one-sided on May 7th.

Mosley already took the blood testing for his fight with Mayweather, so I don’t imagine he’d be against having his blood tested. It’s for a good cause – giving boxing fans a peace of mind – and I think Mosley would do it in a heart beat.

This would be good practice for Pacquiao, because if he ever hopes to have a big money fight against Mayweather, you can bet it’s going to involve Olympic style drug testing. Pacquiao isn’t going to be able to get out of the testing if he wants the fight. If he doesn’t want to take the blood tests, then so be it. Pacquiao can continue to fight Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito, Joshua Clottey and I suppose fight Timothy Bradley if/when Bob Arum, his promoter, signs him up with Top Rank.
