No excuses, Donaire is for real

By Gerardo Granados: Nonito “Filipino Flash” Donaire defeated boxing great Fernando “Ko – Chulito” Montiel by an impressive knockout in two rounds, Montiel fall to the canvas really hurt and seems to had muscular spasm due to the severe concussion he suffered from the perfect left that he received from Donaire.

Drama was included in this thriller when the referee allowed Montiel to continue to fight, it was evident for all the audience that Fernando was able to pick the count but was still hurt on his feet, but the referee allowed Donaire to hurt Montiel even more before stopping the fight; the outcome of this bad call could have ended in a tragedy, Montiel could have end up hurt or worst, but it seems that Fernando is fine afterwards.

Fernando Montiel acknowledged his defeat and made no excuses to justify it, to the date he hasn’t made excuses for any of his losses. It is not proper to made excuses for a fighter is the warrior who lost hasn’t made any, so lets be fair and recognize that Donaire won by an impressive and spectacular knockout. This knockout will be considered as a serious contender for the Knockout of the year no doubt, and will be included in the video highlights of Donaire for ever.

Don’t get me wrong, I have never enjoyed seeing any prize fighter getting injured, but the left hook that Donaire connected to Montiel was simply beautiful, Nonito hit Fernando with a sledgehammer and Montiel crumbled without any chances to recover himself, it was by far more impressive than the knockouts of “Iron” Mike Tyson or Thomas “Hitman” Hearns. Tyson gave a beating to many opponents but he was never able to induct muscular spasms to any of them; Hearns demolished Duran with his “right”, Pipino Cuevas was another of his victims who got clobbered by the Hitman; this knockout was even more impressive than the one that Manny Pacquiao inflict to Ricky Hatton.

Let’s recognize that Donaire is the best bantamweight (not only as the new WBO – WBC bantamweight champion), and that he has a genuine chance to unify the division without too many problems. The future looks bright for Nonito, he can achiever bigger things and conquer titles in higher divisions, he has great speed and power but for me it was surprising too see that he can handle top quality fighters with such ease, he has become a great counter puncher, accurate and very smart inside the ring. Perhaps Nonito will engage once more time against Fernando but maybe it will be at a higher weight division.

As I stated in a previous article, for me boxers don’t have nationality, let’s embrace the new boxing star for what he is, not because where does he comes from. Cheers to the new bantamweight king.
