Mosley says Pacquiao is very hittable

Image: Mosley says Pacquiao is very hittableBy Chris Williams: 39-year-old Shane Mosley isn’t worried in the least with the movement and the different angles that Manny Pacquiao typically throws his shots from when they face each other at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mosley actually thinks he can win this fight despite almost no one giving him any chance to win it.

Speaking with fighthype.com, Mosley said “Pacquiao is very hittable and that’s the problem he has with me because I can put his lights out. I am at least three times faster than [Antonio] Margarito, so if Margarito can touch him, I can touch him too.”

Hitting Pacquiao isn’t that hard to do, because he tends to stand in front of his opponents looking to overwhelm them with punches for the most part. Pacquiao will back off if hit with something hard or if hurt, like Pacquiao was in the 6th round against Margarito when he was hurt with a hard body shot and almost collapsed. Freddie Roach told Pacquiao between rounds to move and avoid exchanges. Pacquiao obediently followed these instructions for awhile. However, by the 8th round, Pacquiao was back standing directly in front of Margarito throwing a lot of shots.

Mosley won’t have to go looking for Pacquiao if he wants to find him to try and take him out. The hard part is trying to match him punch for punch. I don’t think Mosley can do that at his age. If this fight had occurred three or more years ago when Mosley still had his skills intact, I’d say Pacquiao would be in deep, deep trouble. However, Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter didn’t want any part of Mosley at that time and waited until he was nice and shot before showing interest in this fight.

I think Mosley honestly believes that he can take the fight to Pacquiao and stop him. But like a lot of old guys, his mind doesn’t yet know that his body can’t follow those commands anymore. These same aging problems will come to Pacquiao as well if he sticks around as long as Mosley. However, I doubt Pacquiao will let that happen to him. He’ll get out before he starts getting battered. In the mean time, look for Arum to continue to shrewdly match Pacquiao, keeping him away from dangerous fighters and picking off vulnerable fighters or ones that are really old like Mosley.
