By Jim Dower: Unbeaten welterweight contender Mike Jones (23-0, 18 KO’s) and Jesus Soto Karass (24-5-3, 16 KO’s) will be fighting a rematch this Saturday night on the undercard of the Fernando Montiel vs. Nonito Donaire fight at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada. Jones and Karass fought last year on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito bout on November 13th at the Cowboy’s Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and the 27-year-old Jones won a controversial 10 round majority decision.

The decision wasn’t a popular one unfortunately. Indeed, many boxing fans felt that Soto Karass should have been given the decision. Whatever way you scored the fight, the much hyped Jones failed to shine in the biggest fight of his career and showed that he may not be the fighter that some people previously thought he was going to be before being put in with the fringe contender Soto Karass.

Jones showed a lack of hand speed, flexibility and above all and lack of stamina. He gassed out early in the fight while trying to score a quick knockout and looked like a musclebound bodybuilder out of his element, not capable of fighting hard for more three rounds. Soto Karass then took over the fight and appeared to win the fight. However, two of the judges ended up handing the decision to Jones. In the rematch, Jones is going to have to look a lot better if he wants to get a win because Soto Karass has no problems throwing punches all night long without gassing out. He’ll keep firing shots until the end.
