Klitschko-Solis: Odlanier could ruin Vitali’s chance of Haye bout

By Jason Kim: WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (41-2, 38 KO’s) wants to fight WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-1, 23 KO’s) later on this year, possibly in September if Vitali wins his bout against unbeaten challenger Odlanier Solis (17-0, 12 KO’s) and Haye defeats one of three potential opponents for his next title defense in May.

Haye has to pick from Ruslan Chagaev, Denis Boytsov and Alexander Povetkin for his May fight. Klitschko, it would seem, has the much harder task, as Solis looks to be better than the guys that Haye has to pick from for his next fight, and Solis has the hand speed and style to give Vitali a lot of problems.

Vitali has been facing slower heavyweights without a lot of talent since making his comeback in 2008. Solis is a lot better than the likes of Samuel Peter, Juan Carlos Gomez, Chris Arreola, Alberto Sosnowski and Shannon Briggs. It’s not that those guys aren’t good fighters, but by the time that Vitali fought them, most of them were showing signs of fading.

Vitali has got to find a way to handle Solis’ hand speed and combinations if he wants to get this win and be able to move onto a possible bout with Haye. Vitali has become a one punch at a time type fighter. That’s been good enough against the marginal fighters he’s been in with in the past several years, but it’s not going to be enough to beat Solis.

Vitali will have to bring more to the table to beat a skilled guy like Solis. Vitali will likely have to increase his work rate to beat him. He’s also going to need to find some more power by following through with his punches instead of just being content to throw arms punches all night long.
