Image: Julio Cesar Chavez junior admits his poor performanceBy Francisco Hernandez: Julio Cesar Chavez junior speaking to the Mexican media after his fight with Billy Lyell admitted he had a poor performance. He attributed his lackluster efforts to being inactive for a long time, and short training of only three weeks for the Lyell fight. Chavez junior also blamed the distractions he endured in his hometown of Culiacan, Sinaloa.

These admissions or excuses from Chavez junior are disconcerting because in the weeks and days leading up to the Lyell fight, the only things the fans heard was how sharp and ready Chavez junior was for the fight, how he was going to shut up his critics, and how sharp the kid looked in his mitt work with Freddie Roach. After admitting his poor performance Chavez informed the public that he wants and plans to fight the best middleweights or junior middleweights, and if they are not available then to bring on el Canelo, Saul Alvarez.

Chavez junior has no choice, if he wants to continue on the radar of boxing he must fight big names now, people have caught on to his strategy of perpetually fighting fringe club fighters, it will no longer work. Chavez junior has few fans remaining, his hometown was behind him before the Lyell fight, but now he has lost most of them with his deceptions, telling them how sharp he was before the fight, then showing the opposite when he actually fought, now admitting that he was never really in good shape for the fight. Chavez junior appears to have learned how to spin things straight from Bob Arum his promoter.

Chavez junior has a great sense of humor, but he must not take lightly the prospect of fighting the sharks that swim in his weight class. Alfredo Angulo, Saul Canelo Alvarez, they are strong men; they would walk right through Chavez and give him a violent thumping. In the middleweight division Dmitry Pirog would reduce Chavez junior to a punching bag, Sergio Martinez doesn’t have the power to kayo Chavez, but Martinez would slice and cut Chavez’s face from side to side. Paul Williams would be too busy for Chavez, and outwork him in twelve rounds. Does Chavez junior really want to face James Kirkland, I advise him not to, this mean black Texan would drag him around the canvas and throw him out the ring.

But the best option for Julio Cesar Chavez junior is to retire before he gets seriously hurt.
