Image: If Moreno takes away Donaire's left hand, he wins the fightBy Chris Williams: Right now boxing fans are going way over board with their praise of WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (26-1, 18 KO’s) after he defeated Fernando Montiel by a 2nd round knockout recently. But these same fans aren’t seeing that Donaire is a fighter that is totally dependant on his left hand to do most of his work. If you take away Donaire’s left hook, which is his primary weapon, he’s basically a very limited fighter.

Donaire’s facing guys recently that don’t know how to block a left hook and are getting tagged by Donaire’s primary weapon. It takes a schooled fighter to know how to block a left hook, but it’s not that rare. Montiel obviously didn’t have a clue and walked into Donaire’s left hooks instead of keeping his right hand high to pick it off and drive a straight left down the pipe.

Rafael Concepcion, a fighter that gave Donaire pure hell, blocked Donaire’s lefts with ease and punished him all night long. It got so bad for Donaire that he was forced to run from Concepcion to escape the punishment that he was taking. Donaire is likely going to be facing WBA Super World bantamweight champion Anselmo Moreno (30-1-1, 10 KO’s) next in May, and it’s going to be interesting to note whether Moreno is schooled enough to block Donaire’s left hooks.

If he can do this, then I give Moreno an excellent chance of beating Donaire. It’s going to happen sooner or later because blocking left hooks is a pretty standard thing that’s taught to fighters, but it takes a skilled fighter to do this. Donaire has been matched up with guys that have good offensive skills but not defensive ability.
