Froch-Johnson to be shown on Sky on 5/21

By Sean McDaniel: WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KO’s) will be fighting Glen Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KO’s) on May 21st on Sky Sports, in a fight that still doesn’t have a venue ironed down. The fight will likely be taking place in the United States rather than the UK, and that’s something that has made Froch more than a little unhappy.

Froch has had to fight either on the road or in a neutral venue in his past two Super Six tournament fights, and this one will be no different because Showtime wants the fight to take place in the United States.

Froch is currently getting ready for the fight and has his work cut out for him in this fight because of Johnson’s heavy pressure and excellent power. Johnson is the opposite of Arthur Abraham, Froch’s last opponent, in terms of work rate. Froch was able to defeat Abraham by outworking him over 12 rounds to get a win last November.

Froch said this to the telegraph.co.uk: “I’m contracted to fight the semi-final in America. It’s a shame because my last two fights were both away from home and this is a Brit against a Jamaican.”

Froch’s first fight in the Super Six tournament was at home in Nottingham, England, and Froch won that fight by a questionable 12 round split decision over Andre Dirrell. Had that fight been ruled differently by two of the European judges that gave Froch the win, he would be 1-2 in the Super Six tournament instead of 2-1.

Johnson is 42, but fights much younger than his age. Froch has to ignore Johnson’s age and look to throw more punches than him because he’s going to have problems trying to elude Johnson for 12 rounds.

Speaking about his fight being shown on Sky, Froch said “It will be great to get on Sky Box Office alongside other British world champions in [David] Haye and [Amir] Khan. I think I’ve earned it the hard way in my last six fights. All against world class opposition.”
