Dzinziruk vs. Martinez: “I’m going to make a name for myself,” says Sergiy

By Dan Ambrose: WBO junior middleweight champion Sergiy Dzinziruk (37-0, 23 KO’s) isn’t coming to just lay down and let Sergio Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KO’s) beat him when they meet to fight for the WBC middleweight Diamond belt on March 12th at the Foxwoods Resort Casino, in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

The 34-year-old Dzinziruk sees this as a great opportunity for himself to pick up a huge win and get some fame and attention that he’s been sorely missing up until this point in his career.

Martinez is favored in this fight due to his power advantage and the recent success he’s had against Kelly Pavlik and Paul Williams.

However, Dzinziruk has a very real chance of pulling off what would be a huge upset with his ability to box from the outside.

In an article at ringtv, Dzinziruk said “The date on my passport is just a number. I feel like I’m 20 years old again. This is my second chance. I’m going to make a name for myself.”

Dzinziruk’s promising career was going nowhere while he was fighting in Germany. Dzinziruk has held the WBO title since 2005, but has only defended the belt six times, which is a low number. He’s finally out of the contract he had with his previous promoter and is looking to get some big fights, starting with the Martinez bout.

If Dzinziruk wins this fight, he’ll have opportunities to get even bigger fights against the likes of Miguel Cotto and some of the top fighters from the middleweight and super middleweight division if they’re willing to fight him.
