Warren says Khan may have to dig deeper into his pockets to pay for a good opponent

By Sean McDaniel: If you look at the news lately, you’ll see a pattern of WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan complaining of his opponents wanting too much money to fight him and pricing themselves out of a fight with Khan for April 16th. The problem that Khan is now facing is that boxers and their promoters realize how much money Khan is getting for his pay-per-view bouts and they don’t want to be short-changed by receiving a small fraction of what Khan is getting, especially considering they’re the ones with most of the risk because he’s picking guys that he’s obviously better than.

In his column at thesun.co.uk, Khan’s former promoter, Frank Warren, had this to say about Khan and his problems with getting an opponent: “Amir and his team might just have to swallow their pride and dig a little deeper into their pockets.” What Warren says is true. If Khan wants to get a good opponent and one that will ensure that his fight brings in good PPV numbers and gets accepted by HBO in the United States to be shown to American boxing fans, then Khan is going to have to dig deep and come up with the money to get a good opponent.

I don’t know if Paul McCloskey or John Murray, two of the names that Khan has been kicking around, will be the answer he’s looking for if he wants to get HBO to agree to show his fight. They’re obviously good enough for domestic consumption, because both of those guys are well known in the UK. But Khan may need to come up with some better money for a more recognizable fighter like Michael Katsidis is he wants to put on a fight that will be shown to U.S. fans as well. It’s going to take money to get Katsidis to agree.
