Ward vs. Abraham: Andre will erase Arthur from the Super Six tournament competition

By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (31-2, 25 KO’s) is at the end of his rope and is about to be erased from the Super Six tournament by the tourney’s best fighter WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (23-0, 13 KO’s) when they meet up in their semifinal bout in April or May. Abraham, 30, had his brief moment in the spotlight when he was able to score a 12th round knockout over American Jermain Taylor in October 2009.

That after hurting Taylor with a beautiful right elbow to the head in the 9th that staggered him and led the way for his knockout three rounds later. Abraham has since had nothing but bad luck, losing to Andre Dirrell in a lopsided fight that ended with Abraham being disqualified in the 11th round after striking Dirrell while he was down on the canvas from a slip.

Abraham may have lost his confidence from that fight, because he lost his next bout, a winnable fight for him, against Carl Froch last year in November. Abraham did say he over-trained for that fight and I believe him. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that Abraham has now lost his last two fights and is coming into his bout with Ward still licking his wounds from his battles with Dirrell and Froch. It’s a bad situation for Abraham.

You don’t want to be taking on a fighter as talented as Ward unless you are at 110%, and Abraham is probably nowhere near there. I expect him to be desperate and will likely pull out every took in his toolbox to try and get this win. Ward is going to have to literally have eyes on the back of his head because he’s going to be getting hit with some shots, and I expect him to be fouled more than once in this fight. However, unless Abraham comes out with another one of his prize-winning elbows or shots while Ward is on the canvas from a slip, this should be a nice easy win for Ward.
