Vitali gushing about how good Adamek is

By Dan Ambrose: WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko is overwhelmed with happiness at the prospect of either him or his brother IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko facing Tomasz Adamek in September in one of the huge soccer stadiums in Poland. This may not be as big as a fight between one of the Klitschko brothers and WBA heavyweight champion David Haye, but it is a very good paying bout for whichever brother lands the fight.

It’s also a done deal, unlike the failed negotiations that have taken place with Haye. In a press release sent out, Vitali had this to say about Adamek: “Adamek is very experienced, fast and a hard punching opponent. Whether it is Wladimir or me, we have to be very concentrated during the entire fight. It is fantastic that a Polish and a Ukrainian boxer will be together in the ring to set the first sports highlight in the run down to the EURO 2012.”

Let’s be real here. Adamek isn’t all that fast, doesn’t have much power, and his experience at heavyweight is limited to mostly old and weak punchers. Adamek has clearly taken the backdoor to a title fight against the Klitschkos. He hasn’t fought first class opposition, unless you want to count the overweight Arreola as class fighter. Arreola hurt his right hand early in the Adamek fight.

Had that injury not occurred, we could be talking about another fight between the Vitali and Arreola instead of an Adamek bout. Even while fighting mostly with only his left, Arreola was still able to stagger Adamek a number of times in their fight. Vitali is obviously playing up the strengths of Adamek so that he can help hype the fight. He wouldn’t have to hype the bout if Adamek had done his part and faced better opposition at heavyweight instead of a bunch old guys and 2nd tier fighters.

This fight, no matter which brother faces Adamek, is going to be a terrible mismatch. Adamek has no power, size or speed at heavyweight and he’s mostly a fighter that fights timidly. He stands no chance against either of the brothers and he’s likely to get knocked out brutally as soon as one of them catches up to Adamek. You can expect a lot of running from him and an almost unwatchable fight as he sprints around the ring trying not to get hit. As soon as he gets hit clean, I expect it to be over.
