The end of the great Shane Mosley

By Francisco Hernandez: Shane Mosley looked unbeatable as a lightweight but never got a big fight in that division probably because of lack of quality opponents at that time. When Shane moved up to the welterweight division and won a close fight against Oscar de la Hoya, it seemed that Shane was going to become the next Sugar Ray Leonard.

This was not to be as Vernon Forest took him to school in two fights. Mosley then moved up to the junior middleweight division to try to establish dominance there. Again he faced Oscar de la Hoya and won a close fight which many thought Mosley really lost. The cycle repeated itself again for Mosley, after winning against Golden Boy, Mosley was set once again to poise himself as the dominant fighter now of the junior middleweights, this was not to be again because Ronald “Winky” Wright would take Shane Mosley to school in two fights just like Vernon Forest had done in the welterweights.

Shane Mosley would return to the welterweights to seek redemption. It was not the same Shane Mosley that dominated the lightweight division which now faced Miguel Angel Cotto. This Mosley showed signs of aging. In his fight with Cotto, Mosley could no longer pull the trigger. Cotto is not a fast fighter but against Mosley he tried to keep a fast pace, boxing Mosley at long range. Mosley always looked dangerous in the fight, but he just couldn’t pull the trigger. The same thing would happen to Mosley three years later against Mayweather, although this time Mosley would look even older.

After Mosley was beaten by Cotto in 2007, Mosley’s career looked to be over; he looked like a punched ticket. Mosley was seen begging for fights, he was willing to fight anyone to get another chance. Yet even when Mosley could no longer pull the trigger, he was considered too dangerous for Manny Pacquiao by Freddie Roach. The only way Freddie Roach would put Shane Mosley in a fight with Pacquiao was to get Mosley at a ridiculous catch weight that even the desperate Mosley knew it was impossible to make.

Shane Mosley got another lucky break in 2009 when he faced the shadow of Antonio Margarito. Antonio Margarito had just risen to star status after he beat Miguel Cotto to a pulp, probably with stone hard plaster in his wraps. Margarito once tore an ear off his opponent with a punch. Margarito was another fighter who looked like a punched ticket before he redeemed himself with the upset over Cotto, Margarito looked bad against Clottey and lost against Paul Williams. Margarito vs. Mosley was a fight between two shot fighters, one of which was a better boxer, Mosley. This win over Margarito gave Shane Mosley enough clout to consider himself worthy of a shot at the Champions of the welters. Reality would cruelly put Mosley back in his place when he got a fight with Floyd Mayweather junior. Except for a right hand that put Mayweather on wobbly legs, it was the same Mosley who couldn’t pull the trigger against Miguel Cotto. Mosley has great boxing skills but he cannot pull the trigger against faster opponents. Mosley would fight Sergio Mora to prove that it was Mayweather and not age that had led to his one sided loss. Again Mosley would face cold reality; Mosley looked old and weak against a glorified palooka in Sergio Mora.

Most boxing commentators know Shane Mosley is old and can’t look good in a fight unless it is against other punched tickets like Margarito or Cotto. They know Mosley is just going for a big payday against Manny Pacquiao, no one including Mosley believes he can beat Pacquiao. A few ingenuous fight critics think Mosley has a chance because Pacquiao will come straight at Mosley. They say that Mosley knows how to overcome fighters who rush straight at him. This is true about Mosley, but he will not be fighting any typical fighter. In Manny Pacquiao, Shane Mosley will be fighting someone who as he moved up in weight and in age, has become stronger and faster. Usually it is the other way around for fighters, they get slower and weaker as they get older and move up in weight. This is one of the reasons why so many people suspect Manny Pacquiao of using performance enhancing drugs. Even if Mosley is able to land a punch, it will not hurt Pacquiao; this guy could probably take the punch of a heavyweight without flinching. Only Juan Manuel Marquez and Eric Morales in his first fight with Pacquiao had the 45 caliber pistol needed to slow down the rampaging Filipino.

The 45 caliber is supposed to of been developed for the US Army to take down drugged and rampaging Filipino warriors. Shane Mosley doesn’t have the 45 caliber needed to bring down or even slow down Pacquiao. Mosley was old and shot in 2007; he is only worse in 2010. This means that Pacquiao is going to rip Shane Mosley to pieces. Let’s just hope that Shane Mosley will be able to enjoy his paycheck after the one sided massacre. A Helicopter should be made ready to evacuate Shane Mosley in case the fight becomes a deadly event.
