Pacquiao vs. Mosley: Will boxing fans be angry if this turns out to be a mismatch?

By Chris Williams: Despite the fact that 39-year-old Shane Mosley (46-6-1, 39 KO’s) looks to be totally shot, he was still picked out as Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent on May 7th by Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum. This is a fight that just looks ugly on paper given how truly dreadful Mosley has looked in his last two fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Sergio Mora. Mosley lost one of those fights and fought to a draw in the other, but he should have lost both.

That hasn’t stopped Arum from picking him as Pacquiao’s next opponent and putting a big pay-per-view price tag on the Pacquiao-Mosley fight of $50+. Frankly, I think the fight should be steeply discounted to around $5 because of how faded Mosley is. The big PPV fights involving Pacquiao should only be when he’s actually fighting someone relevant, not an old guy that’s on his last leg. I can see a huge backlash against Pacquiao coming from this fight from boxing fans who will feel ripped off if this turns out to be a mismatch like I think it will be.

Pacquiao, Arum and Freddie Roach are all saying that Mosley is a tough fighter and he shouldn’t be over-looked, but how can you agree with that when you look at video of how Mosley was dominated and made to look old by Mayweather and Mora? That pretty tells you all you need to know about Mosley. Heck, you can make a better case for Mora being selected for Pacquiao than Mosley, because Mora controlled the fight with Mosley the entire fight and gave him fits.
