Andre Berto vs. Victor Ortiz a possibility for April 16th

By Jason Kim: According to news from The Ring, there’s talk of an April 16th bout between World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion Andre Berto (27-0, 21 KO’s) and light welterweight contender Victor Ortiz 28-2-2, 22 KO’s). Berto, who tends to fight light welterweights instead of welterweights for his title defenses, was recently rumored to be fighting 36-year-old former light welterweight Randall Bailey next. The fight will be held at a catch weight of 143 or 144 pounds.

It’s unclear if Berto will still take that fight or whether he’ll wait until April to fight the light welterweight Ortiz. It’s a fight that seems like a crazy idea for Ortiz, since he looked terrible against the light hitting Lamont Peterson in December.

Putting him in with someone that can actually punch may cause problems for Ortiz, who can punch very hard himself, but he still seems kind of messed up mentally from his loss to Marcos Maidana in June 2009. Ortiz had his fight against Peterson going well in the early rounds when Ortiz had Peterson on the deck twice while going after him with power punches. But then Ortiz decided to box Peterson and spent the rest of the fight moving around and rarely fighting hard in a sustained manner.

By fighting like this, Ortiz messed up his chance to win the fight and had to settle for a draw. But by putting him in with a fighter like Berto, Ortiz looks doomed for failure in this fight. If Ortiz came out slugging, he might be able to stop Berto as he’s poor defensively, but Ortiz won’t be able to beat a guy like Berto moving around and trying to box him.
