Image: Mosley thinks he can KO Pacquiao: Does anyone believe him?By Dan Ambrose: It’s sad that Bob Arum has chosen to hand-pick 39-year-old totally shot Shane Mosley as Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent on May 7th, because pretty much no one is giving the 40ish Mosley any chance whatsoever and it seems almost laughable/pathetic that Mosley is now saying he plans on knocking Pacquiao out. You know things are bad when even casual boxing fans, who have little knowledge of the sport, aren’t taking Mosley seriously. Whether this will affect the pay-per-view numbers is unclear.

Pacquiao-Mosley should bring in good numbers regardless of how shot Mosley is, because the fight will get a lot of advertising by CBS/Showtime and should do at least as good as Pacquiao’s fight with Miguel Cotto. But at this point, Arum could put Pacquiao in with a fighter that all boxing fans have never heard of and the fight would still likely bring in 1 million PPV buys. We already saw in Pacquiao’s fight against the little known Joshua Clottey that it doesn’t matter who he faces, he’s going to draw well.

The Pacquiao-Clottey fight brought in 700,000 buys, and that was with Pacquiao bringing in the numbers all by himself. But Arum isn’t helping matters by shooting for the money and not for the competition. Mosley is being brought in just because he’s someone that casual fans have heard of. Arum wants to get these people to purchase the fight because he already figures he’s got the hardcore boxing fans willing to purchase the $50+ card. What’s sad is that you can’t get excited about Mosley-Pacquiao because it’s like an upcoming slaughter. You see it on the map on May 7th, but it doesn’t mean much other than the day that Mosley gets his backside handed to him.
