Mosley-Pacquiao: Should Shane retire if he takes a bad beating?

Image: Mosley-Pacquiao: Should Shane retire if he takes a bad beating?By Jason Kim: In being picked out for Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent on May 7th, the 39-year-old Shane Mosley is going to be getting the biggest payday of his career and the point where he no longer has the boxing skills to compete with the better fighters in the sport, especially one as good as Pacquiao. This is the equivalent of a golden parachute or gold watch for the aging Mosley. However, the fight could end up being not worth the money that Mosley is going to be getting if he takes a terrible beating like the one that Antonio Margarito suffered recently or if he ends up getting knocked out badly the way that Ricky Hatton was by Pacquiao in 2009.

That was a horrifying knockout and it’s no wonder that Hatton wisely chose to retire rather than continue his career and risk taking additional knockout defeats. Mosley could find himself in the same boat. He’s lost his hand speed, his ability to fight hard and his defensive skills along with them. He’s now like a giant butterfly without it’s wings to keep him from getting ripped apart by angry cat.

It just doesn’t look good for Mosley, and unless the referee jumps in quickly to stop the massacre on May 7th, we could see Mosley take a career-altering beating and one that will have repercussions after he retires from the sport. If the referee doesn’t stop the beating, hopefully Pacquiao eases off on the old guy and has mercy on him the way that he did against Margarito in his last fight. I don’t want to see Mosley get badly hurt.
