Image: Julio Cesar Chavez Junior: Many don't believe in himBy Francisco Hernandez: Julio Cesar Chavez junior has not fought in his homeland of Sinaloa for over six years. Now he will be amongst his people once again when he fights Billy Lyell on the 29 of January 2011. It makes sense that Chavez junior fight in his hometown because that is surely his last remaining fan base. Chavez junior has turned into a typical Arum fighter, reminds one of Nonito Donaire, Manny Pacquiao and other sheltered or well matched boxing stars.

Mexican fans are still old fashioned and are not used to sheltering fighters, they want to see their boxers fight the meanest, toughest opponents in the world, to witness the fierceness of the Mexican spirit in action. Julio Cesar Chavez junior may become a multi-millionaire and there is nothing against that, but he will never be a legend like the Mountain Lion of Sinaloa, his father, Julio Cesar Chavez senior.

It is no wonder that Chavez junior is losing if not already lost most of his Mexican fan base; he isn’t fighting anybody worth mentioning. Chavez junior should have already begun cleaning up the middleweight division, instead Donaire-like he usually confronts opponents of no significance. Is it any wonder that many no longer believe in him?

Chavez junior should be calling out Sergio Martinez or Paul Williams. I have no doubt that he has a good chance of beating those two fighters, because Chavez junior is tough as nails and the only way these two fighters could beat him is if they out box him. I don’t think Paul Williams wants to get into a brawl with Chavez junior, Sergio Martinez doesn’t have the power to hurt Chavez junior. Yet by sheltering Chavez junior, he is losing opportunities to become a super star in boxing. He may turn out into another Donaire like fighter who waits in the shadows for several years before facing a good opponent.

Chavez junior has returned to his home town because no one else is interested in this fight with Billy.
