By Sean McDaniel Instead of taking on the old and shot looking Erik Morales, WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez says that he wants to step up in weight and take on World Boxing Association light welterweight champion Amir Khan next. In an interview with ESPN Deportes, Marquez said that he wants to face Khan next. Marquez said “If a fight could be made at 140 lbs, I would like to fight Khan.” Marquez, 37, was given three choices of opponents by his promoter Golden Boy Promotions, with one of them being Morales, who looks shot at this point, the other lightweight Robert Guerrero and the last being Khan.

Marquez then picked out Khan. However, it’s unclear whether Golden Boy will allow Khan to fight Marquez because they’re hoping to make a star of Khan and Marquez could spoil things before Golden Boy is able to cash out with Khan. As things are, Khan barely got through his last fight with Marcos Maidana. Khan won, but it didn’t give one a feeling of strong belief that Khan is going to be a star in the light welterweight division. Khan looked more like the faded Zab Judah with his running and weak chin than the next Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Marquez could still end up facing the shot Morales, saying “If Golden Boy took the risk of Morales fight, it should be at 140 pounds. Then would could both be battling for a world championshipp in a fourth weight class, making history and more attractive for fans.”

Marquez seems to be dreaming about him and Morales fighting for a world title at light welterweight, because the only vacant one available, the IBF, is already being fought over by Judah and Kaizer Mabuza. And even if Marquez and Morales were fighting for that title, it wouldn’t be respected by boxing fans because Morales is totally shot and looks terrible. It would be a fight that would be seen as a big joke, except by ignorant boxing fans who have no clue that Morales is way over the hill.
