Donaire’s trainer is worried about Montiel’s left hand – Boxing News

By Dave Lahr: Robert Garcia, the trainer for Nonito Doniare (25-1, 17 KO’s), is a wise owl in spotting the danger in the left hand of WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernado Montiel (44-2-2, 34 KO’s) ahead of Donaire’s fight with Monitel on February 19th at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Donaire, 28, is entering the fight with Montiel not having faced a serious puncher since he fought Rafael Concepcion two years ago in 2009.

On that occasion, Donaire was off to the races after tasting the bitter pain of Concepcions powerful fists in the opening rounds of the fight. The bout essentially became unwatchable after Donaire tasted Concepcion’s power because it was all he could do to throw a few punches every now and then in between gallops around the ring. On 2/19, Donaire is facing the hardest puncher in the bantamweight division in the 31-year-old Montiel, who is one of those rare fighters that can punch with incredible power with both hands equally.

In an article at the examiner.com, Garcia said this about Montiel:”One thing I love about him is his left hand. He’s knocked people out with that uppercut, that hook first and that uppercut. We definitely have to be in the best shape and on top of our games for this fight.”

Donaire is a 2-1 favorite for some reason. The only way I can see it is that the bettors saw Donaire’s fights with over-matched opponents like Wladimir Sidorenko, Raul Martinez, Manuel Varas and Herman Marquez and decided there and then that he could beat Montiel. Instead of watching those fights, they should have watched Donaire’s fight with Concepcion and rightly made Montiel the favorite instead. That’s who’s going to win this fight, not Donaire. He’s the one that’s going to get knocked out and ruined.
