Donaire vs. Montiel: Look for Nonito to turn to jelly at the sight of his own blood

By Dave Lahr: Former IBF flyweight champion Nonito Donaire (25-1, 17 KO’s) is one of those types of fighters that looks and fights real good when he’s ahead and he’s throwing his shots without any adversity. But when suddenly he’s met with a lot of resistance, like when Donaire fought Rafael Concepcion, he quickly gets flustered and comes unraveled.

On February 19th, Donaire is going to be facing a fighter that is going to make him come unglued in his fight against WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel (44-2-2, 34 KO’s) at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Montiel is going to draw some blood early against Donaire and make him feel pain and suffering like he’s never experienced before. Once Donaire finds himself taking shots and seeing his own blood all over his trunks, I see Donaire crumbling mentally like a deck of cards.

From then on, it’s going to be one big chase for Montiel, because Donaire is going to be running like the wind to get away from his blows. Donaire will be in the pure survival mode once he sees his own blood dripping down his face and littering the previously clean canvas.

Donaire’s promoter Bob Arum has kept him nice and protected for the past three years, keeping away from the dangerous guys like Montiel. Under the weak competition, Donaire, like Manny Pacquiao, has been able to flourish and look better than he is.

Donaire hasn’t had to experience any real adversity because of the easy fights he’s had. As such, Donaire is going to be a like a fish out of water when suddenly he’s got the angry little bull Montiel going after him to take his head off. Donaire is going to be like a little lamb bleeting for help as Montiel goes after him. I expect Donaire to turn his back on Montiel and physically start running at some point in the fight.
