Donaire-Montiel: Nonito will look good until he gets hit

By Dave Lahr: Nonito Donaire (25-1, 17 KO’s) is one of those types of fighters that looks great when he’s doing the throwing and when he’s not getting hit back. But you put hands on him, he doesn’t look nearly as good. Donaire is blessed that his promoter is Bob Arum, who does a great job of putting his fighters in winnable fights.

Arum knows their limitations, which is why we don’t see Manny Pacquiao against a certain type of fighter. The same for Donaire. Arum has done a remarkable job of match-making with Donaire and helping to build up a nice 25-1 record for Donaire. However, Arum hasn’t done Donaire any favors by putting him in with the knockout artist Montiel. This is where Donaire is finally being thrown in the deep end of the pool but without the ability to tread water to keep him up.

Donaire won’t have the chin to deal with the monstrous shots. We’re going to see some flopping around with Donaire if he can get up from the knockdown. This may be one of those ugly one-punch knockouts that former junior middleweight knockout artist Julian Jackson was known for with Donaire out cold as soon as he gets hit and just falling down like he’s been shot. You don’t trade with a fighter like Montiel; You run or you get knocked out.

Donaire, with his pumped ego from the spoon fed opponents that Arum has been feeding him, is going to go straight at Montiel and try to trade. It’s going to be ugly, and I’ll be surprised if Donaire makes it out of the 1st round. If he does, we’re going to see running like you’ve never seen before as Donaire literally runs around the ring to try and keep from getting hit. But I expect Donaire to be finished off with the first few big shots he gets hit with.
