Cotto vs. Mayorga: Will Miguel’s scar tissue around his eyes hold together?

By Dave Lahr: WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) is like a walking scar from all the cuts he suffered around his face, especially his eyes, in various fights during his career. It seems like Cotto can’t go one fight without having his eyes ripped open or his eyebrows peeled like a bloody banana.

And the worse thing about it is that Cotto fights terribly once he’s cut, and seems to really lose his composure. On March 12th, Cotto is going to be facing former IBF/WBA/WBC welterweight champion Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 23 KO’s) at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

If there’s one fighter that can take advantage of all the scar tissue that Cotto has around both of his eyes it’s Mayorga. Eight years ago Mayorga was considered by many boxing fans to be the best fighter in the welterweight division. Indeed, during that short period of time, Mayorga was likely a better fighter than Cotto could ever hope to be.

Mayorga was the guy at welterweight. Cotto, in contrast, has never been considered to be the best fighter in any division he’s been in. He’s always been 3rd or 4th fiddle. Even now at junior middleweight, few boxing fans see Cotto as the best fighter in the division.

He’s basically seen as someone that is holding a paper title for a brief stretch until someone like Manny Pacquiao comes along and beats the living daylights out of Cotto again. However, Mayorga might beat Pacquiao to the job. If Mayorga can put hands on Cotto any amount of time, we could see Cotto fall apart like Frankenstein monster.

There’s so much scar tissue holding Cotto together. If Mayorga hits on that scar tissue, we could see Cotto unravel be nothing but a bunch of broken and twisted flesh in the ring. I can see a big bloody mess and Mayorga covered in blood from his feet to the top of his head with big smile on his face. We may not be able to see anything through all that blood but Mayorga’s teeth and his eyes. That’s how much scar tissue Cotto has on his face.
