By Eric Thomas: WBC light welterweight champion Devon Alexander (21-0, 13 KO’s) is coming into the January 29th bout against WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (26-0, 11 KO’s) licking his wounds from his disappointing performance against Andry Koteknik in August of last year. Alexander may have got the win and put the performance behind him, but there’s no escaping the fact Alexander was pounded on in that fight and exposed on many levels by Kotelnik.
Alexander just wasn’t kind of exposed, he really exposed in that fight. These are major flaws that Alexander can’t hope to fix by next week when he faces Bradley at the Pontiac Silverdome, in Michigan. Alexander needs a lot of time and a lot of different tune-up fights before he’s ready for a fighter as good as Bradley. Alexander is not going to get that time, and he’s just going to have to try and do the best he can and try to knock Bradley out.
The winner of this fight gets to fight WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan next, and that may be a lot easier fight for them than facing each other. Khan took a beating in his last fight with Marcos Maidana and he’s likely not going to be fully recovered from that beating. Khan may be just a formality for the Alexander-Bradley winner, because they’re both looking better than the British fighter.
Bradley will beat Alexander if he can make sure he doesn’t get knocked down more than once. Bradley gets knocked down from time to time, and his chin is a little questionable. However, he is so fast and compact that he’s able to cover up and get out of the way of incoming shots. He’s going to be getting hit really hard by Alexander, who obviously is aware that Bradley can be hurt and will be looking to take him out at all costs.
