Battle of the Egos: Haye vs. Wladimir

By Mark Hepplestall: One thing that the whole boxing world can agree on is that there is only one Heavyweight title fight that should be happening this year and it is Wladimir Klitschko Vs David Haye for a unification bout. Unfortunately for many reasons the two are not trying their hardest to make the fight happen, with Haye not budging on contract demands and Wladimir not budging on demands, plus the fact that Booth and Beonte are unwilling to compromise making a big mess that is unlikely to end soon.

Firstly many people think that Haye doesn’t want anything to do with Wladimir now he has a world title, this may be partly true but it just seems that Wladimir is giving Haye reasons to pull out. Surely an intelligent manager would allow some demands to be met, such as 50-50 splits, maybe fighting in Las Vegas or Wembley Stadium UK so that more money can be made for both fighters and to grow a larger fan base. The biggest stumbling block this time is that Wladimir insists on fighting Derek Chisora first on April 30th and then fighting Haye in 70 days, Haye insists that there is too much risk on Wladimir losing, getting slight injuries such as cuts, gaining an larger injuries such as abdominal injuries or pectoral injuries and also Haye insists that the Chisora fight may make their fight harder to market. Wladimir insists on fighting Chisora as a tune up, or keep busy fight in April, maybe this isn’t the greatest idea Beonte and Wladimir have came up with as I do not see what Wladimir is gaining from the fight, he is 99% likely to win, Chisora hasn’t even completed 12 rounds so is clearly not ready to fight for a world title, also I have not seen much in his 14 fight career that suggests he could complete a massive upset win. Clearly the only thing Wladimir gains is some money and a release from his current TV deal, which leaves him open for new TV deals.

A second problem is Wladimir’s insistence to fight Tomasz Adamek in Poland a little more than a month after the possible Haye fight. I personally do not think Adamek deserves a title shot as he hasn’t really fought any good boxers at heavyweight, and has struggled with two of the opponents he has faced in Arreola and Grant however this is determined on what you look for in a fight. Fighting Adamek in September really stops the chances of Wladimir renegotiating with Haye for a fight later in the year then July but before 30th October. Now I do agree that Adamek will be the biggest name on Wladimir’s record since the Sultan Ibragimov unification bout no more than 3 years ago, so I can see why this bout is important to Wladimir. Maybe the best option would be for Adamek to fight a real contender such as Tony Thompson, Eddie Chambers or Samuel Peter, one of those fights would settle it as Adamek becoming the number one contender.

Everyone wants to see the Klitschko Vs Haye bout and there is only one way to make the bout happen in July and that is for Wladimir to be the bigger man and reschedule the Chisora fight to after the Haye and Adamek fights, maybe even putting Chisora on the undercard if he wants so he can get worldwide exposure against half decent opposition. Wladimir and Beonte have huge egos and will not compromise and Haye and Booth have just as big egos if not bigger and will not compromise, who is the big loser? It’s not either of the world champions who are so rich they never have to do any real work for the rest of their lives! The loser is boxing, the losers are the fans.
