Arum says Pacquiao-Mosley will be “The greatest boxing show ever”

By Chris Williams: When you look at the May 7th mismatch between Manny Pacquiao and 39-year-old Shane Mosley, the last thing you think of is it being the greatest show that you’ll ever see. However, Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum, who personally hand-picked the badly faded – read: totally shot – Mosley, thinks this is going to be something special. I wish I could have some of what Arum is drinking.

In an article at the Manila Bulletin, Arum says the Pacquiao-Mosley bout will be the “The greatest boxing show ever….something that’s never been done before in the sport of boxing.”

Arum also expects it to bring in high pay-per-view numbers, but hasn’t said what kind of numbers he foresees for the fight. Arum will probably succeed in making the Mosley-Pacquiao bout a success on PPV because boxing fans purchase anything related to Pacquiao regardless of what’s put in the ring with him. And this fight will have the benefit of having an opponent across from Pacquiao that the casual boxing fan has heard of Mosley.

The problem is the casual fan won’t have the knowledge about how shot Mosley is and won’t find out until they’ve already paid their $50+ for the mismatch. It’s a fight that is destined to be a lopsided win for Pacquiao. I can’t see this as being the “Greatest boxing show ever” even if Arum has parade floats and models coming out to the ring along with the fighters.

At the end of the day, it’s still a shot fighter on his last leg facing a guy still in his prime. It’s too bad someone a little younger and more together wasn’t found for Pacquiao. But then again, that would break from the pattern of the kinds of guys that Pacquiao has been getting matched with as of late.
