Khan says he might fight Kell Brook in the future

By William Mackay: WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 Ko’s) has rejected yet another possible opponent for his next fight in April, ruling out the chance that he’ll be facing either #1 ranked World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight contender Kell Brook (23-0, 16 KO’s) or interim WBO lightweight champion Michael Katsidis (27-3, 22 KO’s) next.

Khan, 24, doesn’t feel it’s time to fight Brook, saying on his twitter “We both agree in the future it would be a fight but not just yet.”

Khan may be ultimately sorry he didn’t take the fight with Brook, because unless he’s matched very softly and kept away from guys like Devon Alexander and Timothy Bradley, there’s a better than average chance that Khan will taste the canvas once again and end up knocked out.

Another knockout loss for Khan will lower his stock to the point where boxing fans will start to see him as a fighter with a lot of hype but not substance. Khan was on shaky legs in the last three rounds in his last bout against Marcos Maidana, and the strange thing is Khan wasn’t hit all that much in the fight because he spent most of the fight running and clinching Maidana.

Against a fighter with better foot and hand speed like Alexander or Bradley, Khan will be getting hit much more often and we could see Khan staggering around the ring much earlier in the fight than the 10th. If Khan gets hurt against those two fighters, he won’t survive, even with someone like referee Joe Cortez jumping in to pull Alexander and Bradley off of Khan.

Those guys are too fast, too accurate and too powerful with their short punches. With a loss to one or both of those fighters, Khan will likely change his tune about not wanting to fight Brook. A year from now, Brook will be where Khan is now and looking to make big things happen in the welterweight division.
