Are we seeing the arising of a new generation of boxers?

Image: Are we seeing the arising of a new generation of boxers?By Reynaldo Sanchez -Editor/Boxeoeditores.com – How will boxing be in 40 or 50 years for now? Is it possible that we’re before the born of a generation of fighters that will make us believe that the old sport of boxing that we know today gave a jump to the future?

In these last days, Amir Khan and Alex Ariza made some declarations to the press. After the Khan-Maidana’s fight, where the British fighter achieved a victory by unanimous decision, both of them alleged that nobody in the team, handled by Roach and Ariza, have nothing to hide, referring to banned substances or PED’s.

Ariza defends itself saying that what Miguel Diaz, trainer of Maidana, said after the fight was a direct accusation. Diaz calls me a cheater, said Ariza. He suggested the possibility that we are out of the rules of doping, and that harms us, Ariza assured.

Diaz affirmed that he calls him a ‘fraud’, and if Ariza or roach talked of doping, that has nothing to do with him. When I accuse Ariza, I didn’t use the doping word. Maybe it is a reflex of his subconscious the fact that they, the Wildcard Team, quote this topic.

In some press releases, Khan let know that he, and his colleague, Manny Pacquiao, are victims of professional jealousy from persons without conscience, and without any evidence. He is right; we know that they are submitted to the weak analysis required by boxing commissions to detect doping. Nevertheless, it is also true that since Manny Pacquiao and Freddie Roach decided not to do the examination requested by Floyd, many eyebrows have gotten up. This situation without doubts, hits everybody who train on the Roach and Ariza Gym.

At this point I think that these two comments here are a curtain of smoke. Bob Arum and Pacquiao chose to fight against Shane Mosley in May 2011. This election upset many persons, who want to see the Philippine against others fighters, and not against an older Mosley with 40 years and near to retirement. With their expressions, Ariza and Khan are trying to raise a curtain and remove the spotlight of attention toward a very hot topic, which would give them a breath from the whole avalanche of disapprovals that the Pacquiao-Mosley fight generates.

In this aspect, I remember the attitude of Nonito Donaire, who at the present works very closes with Victor Conte, the architect of BALCO’s Laboratories. Conte was involved in steroids scandals, and he was even condemned to prison for those things. According to the “Philippine Flash”, Nonito is ready to submit any examination that they consider suitable in order to demonstrate that he is clean of illegal substances, saying “If there is something, that they feel that they have to verify in me on some medicine or something, then I want to be proved. I want to do something that demonstrates that I don’t do badly at all, and have said to Victor this”. Donaire has a line of 23 victories and 8 knockouts in his last 10 fights.

In my opinion this is the right approach to the problem, if there is nothing to be afraid of, allow all analysis to detect substances to be taken with responsibility. But, if as it was said earlier, the team of
Khan and Packiao just says that they are clean, and are not willing to present the tests, as Donaire have done, they remove this bogey from the Gym handled by Roach and Ariza.

So, are we seeing a new generation of fighters, or is this only a small chaos to keep the attention of the fans towards another line, and to not call attention to the election of the older Mosley as the next contender to Pacquiao?

The undisputable true of this entire dilemma is that, while none of the fighters that train with Roach-Ariza ‘The Dynamic Duo’ surrender analysis to detect substances in Olympic style, there will always be somebody who puts doubts in the incredible performances of these fighters. According to Ariza ‘The Yerbatero’, his supplements are not illegal; he affirms that they can be bought by anyone in specialized establishments. If this is true, I believe that very soon we will see many boxers with lacks of stamina and power, being transformed into ‘Colossuses’ as Pacquiao did, and whoever does not consume these ‘potions’ will be giving advantage to his rivals.

How up will we go? Well, nobody knows. Considering that while the Olympic style examinations to detect illegal substances aren’t approved by the commissions, this type of fighters will keep on arising. They will not know the fatigue, they will be capable of go up to amazing weight classes with capacity. It’s a mystery what these fighters of the future will be able to become. What I have not doubts of, is that from here on, there will be less shock when watching this kind of “Universal Soldiers” walk by a lot of weight divisions, retaining their speed and power.
