Image: Alexander has a rematch clause with Bradley, but it's doubtful that HBO will want to show a second Bradley-Alexander boutBy William Mackay: WBC light welterweight champion Devon Alexander (21-1, 13 Ko’s) came up short on Saturday night, losing in part due to a series hard headbutts but mostly because he didn’t have the toughness to beat WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (27-0, 11 KO’s). The fight was stopped after yet another head butt in the 10th round, and with Alexander complaining that his head hurt, the fight went to the cards with Bradley winning by the scores of 97-93, 96-95 and 98-92.

Alexander, perhaps to make himself feel better, bragged “It don’t matter who I fight. I got a rematch clause with Timothy Bradley, so we’ll get it on.” Well this is true, Alexander does indeed have a rematch clause. But because of how painfully boring this fight was and Alexander’s last fight against Andriy Koteknik, it’s highly doubtful that HBO will elect to put the show on their network.

A rematch between Bradley and Alexander won’t mean a whole heck of a lot if HBO doesn’t show it, and Alexander really would be better off seeking out an opponent he can actually beat. He can’t beat Bradley, and he’ll just lose again if they fight once more. One would hope that Alexander doesn’t complain that his head hurts if he does ram heads accidentally with Bradley in a rematch, because pain is part of boxing. Alexander is going to have to learn to live with it. But as far as HBO showing their rematch, it’s doubtful they will bother. What HBO is looking for from fighters is a Amir Khan vs. Marcos Maidana type of exciting fight. What we got tonight with Alexander vs. Bradley was the exact opposite of that.
