Is Paul Williams finished as competitive fighter?

By Allen Hmiel: All it took was a powerful long looping wild left hand landing flush against the bony jaw of lean lanky Paul Williams to shatter a career of hopes and championship dreams. Martinez did with one pulverizing career ending Knock out punch what 37 fighters couldn’t do put the pseudo ex top P4P fighter into a stunning deep sleep in the middle of the ring. An embarrassing even stunning second round canvas nap turned a seemingly invincible Williams into just another exposed and flawed fighter who probably will never be the same fighter.

A devastating Knockout in a Championship fight with no ten count needed sends a message to the recovering fighter when he wakes up that his once invincible iron jaw has abandoned him and left him vulnerable for every hard hitting power puncher he will ever face again. Paul Williams who once had what many said was an iron jaw saw his reputation destroyed and his career possibly ended with one devastating blow.

Ask Ricky Hatton who retired immediately after waking up after little Manny’s fist exploded on the jaw of the much overrated Hatton’s face and putting the over hyped under talented British Champ into an immediate and career ending retirement. Losing by KO in devastating fashion destroys the confidence a fighter needs to believe in himself and his ability to take the best any opponent can offer at any time. Belief in oneself is the hidden intangible trait that gives a fighter the ability to accept all challenges and face adversity and the onslaught of punches from all opponents. Paul Williams will never again reign supreme or be the top contender for any belt as his belief in himself was flushed away with Martinez exposing the lanky Williams and his padded record as extremely average.

As with a crystal vase that is shattered and put together again carefully. It will look the same maybe, but the thought will always remain how sturdy or strong is it, and will it shatter again. Paul Williams will forever be remembered as the talented fighter with the 82 inch reach that got Knocked out shockingly by a fighter who wasn’t known as a huge puncher. The body may heal but Paul Williams’ mind will never forget and always remember how fragile that exposed jaw and chin really is. Doubt in ones own ability sometimes hits harder than an opponents punch.
