If Mosley doesn’t run out of gas, Pacquiao is in trouble

By Dave Lahr: If you bother to look at Shane Mosley’s last two fights, you’ll probably have noticed that his conditioning has horrible. He’s looked tire and even slightly flabby in his 12 round draw with Sergio Mora. But you never know if Mosley might be able to find the conditioning that enabled him to wipe out Antonio Margarito last year.

If that same Mosley shows up on May 7th, I have no doubts that he’ll beat Pacquiao and beat him badly. Mosley is a much more advanced fighter than Pacquiao, and he’s probably forgotten more than Pacquiao will ever know. I don’t care that Pacquiao is trained by Freddie Roach. Mosley is a much more skilled fighter.

I think Roach must have been keeping Pacquiao in the slow lane in terms of training all these years, because he’s always been a pretty basic fighter with mostly crude skills. Okay, so if Mosley can get in good enough shape to fight hard for 12 rounds, this is his fight. He’ll beat the starch off of Pacquiao and send him home to the Philippines minus his WBO welterweight strap.

An in shape Mosley is that good. Pacquiao has been getting over based on just throwing massive amounts of punches and taking out his opponents or beating up on Top Rank fodder like Margarito and Joshua Clottey. Mosley is in a whole different league compared to those guys. He’s got a lot of knowledge and ability, as long as his conditioning is there.

It hasn’t been lately, so you have to assume that his problems with running out of gas will likely continue into the Pacquiao bout. But if he can get it together on this one night and fight hard like he used to be able to, then Pacquiao is toast. He won’t stand a chance and will get schooled badly.
